Every week, I love to bring tons of joyful energy and compassion to my Yoga classes at several Greenville Adult Day Centers.
I lovingly call the center my disabled-daughter attends: “The Club.” (It’s always kept our conversation around it fun and upbeat in my household!)
At the centers, I lead adaptive chair and mat-based yoga classes for individuals across the ability spectrum: seniors, people with disabilities, wheelchair users and those with limited mobility or mental-handicaps. I believe we’ve created an incredible community where people of all abilities light up each time class is getting ready to start.
Institutional settings like adult day programs and senior living communities often serve individuals with a mix of physical, cognitive or emotional needs. By offering adapted yoga:
Residents can see benefits like improved balance and flexibility, hopefully reducing fall risk and even enhancing daily function
Participants can also experience enhanced emotional wellbeing, lowered anxiety and better sleep and mood
Group classes also help build social interaction, can reduce loneliness and increase the sense of belonging
A review on chair/adapted yoga in older adults has found strong evidence that it improves physical function, mood and quality of life
A trial in physically inactive older adults showed adapted yoga significantly improved lower-body strength, flexibility and mental wellbeing
Chair yoga has even been shown to help prevent falls, supports muscle tone, and enhance balance in seniors
At each center, I am always tailoring sessions to the group’s needs that day—combining gentle seated or standing poses, breath exercises and mindful movement.
I offer props, supports and intuitive pacing to ensure every participant can engage positively. It’s so beautiful to watch each person in their own groove and flow.
I love seeing first-hand, the upbeat lightness, joy and more fluid movement of the participants right after class. Many families have shared subtle physical improvements in posture or mobility, but equally important is the emotional lift they also notice.
Check-out some videos on the Services page that showcase smiling faces, active engagement and the shared community.
It’s so important to me to grow the reach to more senior living centers, assisted living facilities and local adult day programs in Greenville.
I truly believe partnering can enrich your community’s wellness offerings.
If you represent a Greenville facility, or a family member that has someone at one, I’d love to explore what it looks like to add adaptive yoga to the weekly offerings!
Sometimes, it’s just the right connection that can bridge to the next level of impact.
I’d be honored to bring “The Club”-type Yoga energy to your community.
